As Iโve done research on accessibility and communications, I was shocked but not surprised that a lot of the advice is about boosting marketing metrics and getting picked up in search results. There was not a lot around building accessibility toโฆyou knowโฆsupport and engage the disability community. While thatโs frustrating to say the least, itโs also why I created this newsletter. I see so much โmarketingโ advice that dehumanizes and encourages exploitative tactics. I donโt believe that we have to build our communications that way so I started this newsletter to create communications in a heart-first way.
While I wish the focus was different, it is true that being intentional about the accessibility of your communications can lead to higher engagement rates and meeting organizational goals. The curb cut effect works! Letโs look at one aspect: video. In study after study, we see that adding captions to videos is supportive for many, which then leads to more support going your way.
- In 2023, 85% of people on Facebook watch videos without sound
- Verizon in 2019 said 69% of users are watching videos with the sound off
- On Twitter, in 2023 videos without sound and captions or text overlay had a 28% increase in view time
