storytelling for change - actionable communications advice for advocacy, activists, and campaigns

Tired of signing up for newsletters and not finding them helpful for your everyday work? This newsletter is built differently. Itโ€™s created for you, for cultivating social change in a chaotic digital world.

Uprooting Urgency Culture in Activism

How we run movements and organizations is a direct reflection of how we can cultivate change in the real world. If our organizational practices don't align with our values, it's going to be hard to solve the root causes. If our goals as social change communicators are to dismantle harmful systems to cultivate new systems, then we must begin that cultivation in ourselves as we work to spread our values more universally. (For more, read our Roots of Change series on slowness.)

โ€œThere can be no equity if that equity doesnโ€™t include the employees charged with delivering it,โ€ says Dawn Wolfe

White supremacy culture is rooted in the insatiable desire to constantly produce at the expense of our own needs and bodies. This leads to harmful practices that have become normalized. A sense of urgency and perfectionism are basic characteristics of a white supremacy culture precisely because these practices ask us to ignore our bodies and needs.

When something is urgent, we are in a โ€œfight or flightโ€ mode. We tend to move quickly and make decisions without strategic thought. That, in turn, leaves us little room to reflect on the impact of our work.

That can especially be true in the careers that are meant to combat white supremacy culture. Non-profit and political work can be incredibly impactful on peopleโ€™s lives, but itโ€™s often not well funded. Staff accepts salaries half of what theyโ€™d get in the private sector, with the understanding that theyโ€™ll probably work more hours with a lean staff.

Building Tools & Practices for Healthy Activism

To bring back our humanity, including our creativity, we need to bring more spaciousness into our communications work. Having more time and space to plan, strategize, and act is how communicators can be effective.

This newsletter and many of the other resources I offer are to directly address these conflicts so that social change communicators can feel ease in working within their values.

getting to the roots - navigating tech, media, and communications
  • ๐Ÿ“š Instagram Appears to Be Testing Hashtag Limits - According to Social Media Today, Instagram will be limiting the number of hashtags per post to five tags.
    • ๐Ÿค“ The Root ๐ŸŒฑ - I go back and forth on hashtags. Instagramโ€™s organic reach and discoverability is so challenging now that they canโ€™t hurt. Be specific with your hashtags to find your audience.
  • ๐Ÿ“š The GOPs New Consultant Model: Rev Share - Revenue sharing is gaining popularity in the right. In. A rev share model, the agency would get paid based on a percentage of the candidatesโ€™ fundraising total.
    • ๐Ÿค“ The Root ๐ŸŒฑ - No wonder itโ€™s popular on the right! This model goes against progressive values and incentivizes agencies to rake in money at the expense of the candidate.
  • ๐Ÿ“š Microsoft Wants to Be Search King - OpenAI is developing a web search product that would be partly powered by Microsoft Bing.
    • ๐Ÿค“ The Root ๐ŸŒฑ - Microsoft has been trying to unseat Google search for a while. With AI's tendency to not be fully accurate, I am hesitant this will be a big shakeup in search habits.
