My Best Friend is a Hummingbird

My best friend is a hummingbird.

She floats by my window to wish me a good morning as the reds and oranges fuse through the misty fog.

She inspects my tofu sandwich when I sit on the patio for lunch, her chest feathers glinting in the sun.

She dances in the rainbow-speckled shower when my partner waters the plants, chirping her blessings for the impromptu bath.

She floats and flits, ascending and descending with ease, chirping her little song, content in her role as nectar gatherer.

She reminds me of our connection to the earth.

We build our tall, vast concrete cities and sit in our fossil-fuel powered steel boxes to keep nature out but we are nature.

Nature never left us.

We never left nature.

As much as we try to hide our reality, we are just like the bears, coyotes, and deer that live amongst us.

We may commute to our day jobs, do the laundry, and transport ourselves through the sky on jet planes, but we are still of the animal kingdom.

We have a role just as other animals and plants serve our ecosystems.

Today, I ask you to notice.

Most of us may live in concrete metropolisโ€™ but nature is all around us. Take a breath to notice the birds and squirrels, the little plants ๐ŸŒฑ fighting to emerge from the sidewalk cracks. It may be small, but nature is all around. We are nature.

Pausing and reflecting on how we are connected to each other and the earth helps to ground us in what is most important and keep us buoyed as we navigate the daily human struggles we face.

What do you notice?
